On Day 1, Trump escalates tariffs by promising steep levies on commodities originating from China, Canada, and Mexico.
In a move that could significantly raise costs for American consumers and businesses, President-elect Donald Trump pledged Monday to enact significant tariff increases on goods originating from China, Canada, and Mexico as soon as his government begins.
Trump claimed that the action would be taken in response to “crime and drugs” and illegal immigrants crossing the border.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, “As one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents on January 20th to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders.” “Until drugs, especially fentanyl, and all illegal aliens stop this invasion of our country, this tariff will remain in effect!”
According to Trump, the neighbors of the United States can “easily solve this long simmering problem.”
In a similar vein, Trump declared that until China stops the flow of illegal narcotics into the US, it will be subject to 10% higher taxes on its goods than any current levies.
“I have had many talks with China about the massive amounts of drugs, in particular Fentanyl, being sent into the United States – But to no avail,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
In the article, the president-elect asserted that Chinese officials “never followed through” on their vow to kill drug dealers found smuggling drugs into the US.
Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu responded to Trump’s announcement by stating that “the idea of China knowingly allowing fentanyl precursors to flow into the United States runs completely counter to facts and reality” and that his nation has been in contact with the US regarding counternarcotics operations.
